Prashant Rao was introduced into the art of handshadowgraphy at a young age. His father Prasanna Rao – who had studied at “Shantiniketan”, the institute founded by the renowned poet Rabindranath Tagore – had developed the art and had attained the highest level of perfection. Just like his father, Prashant Rao accompanies his performance – where shadows created solely by his two hands are projected onto a screen – with songs by Tagore. John Simon of the New York Magazine had described Prasanna Rao’s performance as: "When Rao does shadow theater with his hands, Picasso, Pollini, and Disney are equally present." These are the footsteps that Prashant Rao attempts to follow.

Über Prasanna Rao hatte schon John Simon von der New Yorker Magazine geschrieben: "When Rao does shadow theater with his hands, Picasso, Pollini, and Disney are equally present."
